Mud season

Sorry for the blog silence yesterday, it was just one of those days with too much running around in it! I missed the opportunity to mark the first day of spring, so I'm waxing rhapsodic about it today.

As a kid growing up in Oregon, spring was my favorite season. Lots of green things growing, the slow progression of perennials from snowdrops through tulips, and the riotous explosion of cherry blossoms on the trees — there was a lot to love.

Here in upstate New York, though, spring is "mud season," and boy is that an apt description of what's going on right now. It's rainy, windy, muddy and brown everywhere I look. But the change is there, in the air; the cold wind doesn't bite quite as hard, and when the sun is shining, you can actually smell things again. Like dirt. Which isn't a flower, but it isn't snow, either.

So I figure, if the landscape isn't going to cooperate by showing me flowers, I've got to provide some of my own. This flowered dress is one of my favorite vintage items — it's comfy and cute, and I always get compliments when I wear it.

I added a maroon knit top and gray leggings underneath, and topped it with my new favorite blazer and a blue cotton rebozo scarf that my late grandmother brought me back from one of her numerous trips to Central American. This scarf is a total case for keeping things in your closet; I had this scarf for years, just sort of sitting around, and then the whole scarf trend happened and suddenly it became one of my most-reached-for accessories. Go figure.
