Not Working

Have you ever had a garment that just is not working, but for some reason, you try to convince yourself it is? Maybe it was a gift and you feel bad discarding it; maybe you paid a lot of money for it; maybe you really like the color, the print or the style. Whatever the reason, you just doggedly keep wearing it even though you know it's too big or too small or just doesn't suit your body type or your style. Well — meet my gray slacks.

These trousers have actually appeared here before — they were one of my weekly fashion challenge items back in February. And looking at both sets of photos, it's really obvious to me that these pants are just too damn big for me, and I need to get rid of them. I find this wide-leg style difficult to wear even under ideal conditions, but when the fit through the waist and hips isn't just right, it's basically impossible to make them look nice. This face pretty much sums up how I felt:

That being said, I am delving into my closet to find some wide-leg pants that DO fit me, because I liked the look I was trying to achieve here and want to attempt it again, hopefully with better results.

A couple of hours after I took these photos, I snagged this necklace on something and one of the wires broke, sending seed beads flying all over my kitchen. (I think my dogs only gobbled up a few of them before I managed to stop them.) It was one of the low notes of an all-around crappy day, the less said about which, the better. Today I am recruiting my daughter to help me finish up a super sekrit Father's Day project for my husband, so that should be fun. (Or it will be a total disaster — we'll see.) What are you doing for Father's Day this year?

Coral and gold necklace: Gift
White cropped cardigan: Old Navy, thrifted
Navy polka dot polo: Vintage, thrifted
White grommet belt: Somewhere embarrassing like Delia's
Gray trousers: Worthington, JC Penney
White pumps: Vintage, small and mousey's Etsy shop

  1. I've definitely had garments like that. I try to let go of them right away, but it's hard.

  2. umm, YES! I think everyone has items like that. and that's what makes it so hard to get rid of stuff! I keep stuff for all of the above reasons, it was a gift, I paid a lot, I love the print, etc. but if there's one thing I've learned as I've gotten older, it's that when an item doesn't fit right, it's not comfortable, and therefore I'll just never gravitate toward wearing it, and it sits in my closet.

SO anyway, just rip the bandaid off! I'd say the wide leg is not too bad (and those style pants are really in!) but the hip/top area definitely looks loose. good news- you can size way down!
