Ragtag

I used to try to still look "professional" on casual Fridays, but I've totally given up and now I just go for comfort with a side of cute.

Toddler Thursday make-up post

First off, thanks to everyone who participated in yesterday's Work It Wednesdays linkup despite the technical problems I had :(  I will be announcing next week's challenge theme tomorrow for anyone who wants to join in the next round — I promise to sort out my linking issues by then!

Work It Wednesdays linkup: Summer dresses in winter

I'm excited to announce my first ever Work It Wednesdays linkup! This week's challenge is to style a summer dress in a winter-appropriate way. Click through to add your link at the bottom of this post. You can also vote for your favorite look.

This was actually a really hard challenge for me, because it turns out I don't really have a lot of "summery" dresses in my closet! I wound up borrowing one from my Etsy shop that I had listed last summer. With its light green and pink floral print, it's sort of more spring than summer, but I figured it still fit the challenge.

To make this springtime dress winter-appropriate, I paired it with a dark brown cardigan and burgundy tights, and topped it with my trusty pink pashmina, which I fudged into a shape that resembles an infinity scarf.

My first instinct was to wear brown pumps with this outfit, but I thought that boots would give a stronger winter feel, so I went with these brown suede pull-on wedges.

As a special thank-you to everyone who participates in this inaugural linkup, I'll be offering an exclusive coupon code for my Etsy shop to everyone who posts a link! If I don't already have your contact info, please drop me a line or leave me a comment (let me know if you want me to keep your comment private if you do not want your email address posted publicly).

**NOTE: I am having trouble with the linkup script, so if you're having trouble sharing your link, please leave it in the comment field and I will add it manually. Tech genius, over here, I tell ya.**

Brown cardigan: Modcloth, gift (thanks Mom and Dad!)
Green calico sundress: Vintage, thrifted
Straw stretch belt: Vintage, thrifted
Maroon tights
Brown suede pull-on boots: Thrifted
Total cost to me: About $10

No-Toddler Tuesday :(

Today's Toddler Tuesdays post was canceled on account of extreme crankiness. I'll give it another shot on Thursday.

Not myself

I stayed home from work this morning to do a few errands and chores, and it's bizarre how much it's throwing me off to deviate from my usual routine.

Posey dress | $14

Beatrice dress | $21
Each of them is special in some way — a little detail that caught my eye, or a wonderful print or fabric — but most are also appropriate for everyday wear, and all are affordably priced (most are under $20).

Sold!
Suzie dress | $8

Katie dress | $8
I will be adding a few more items to the collection in the coming months, including an adorable seashell-print swimsuit and a couple of fun little rompers, but I wanted to get these sweet dresses out there now. It's so nice to start thinking about spring!

If you see anything here (or in my shop in general) that you would like to reserve, just email me and I can set up a custom order for you.

Weekend roundup

Giveaway winner

This week's giveaway winner was @nikkimccain, who entered via Twitter. Nikki, message me on Twitter or email me with your address and I will send you your belt right away!

Weekend Wants

I recently stumbled upon RetroRageVictoria, which sells costume jewelry, and absolutely fell in love. The prices are amazing (even with shipping from Canada!) and her images are total eye candy. I pretty much want to buy everything in the shop.

Gold tone feather brooch by RetroRageVictoria | $7.50
How ridiculous would it be to buy this skirt, and then chop like a foot off the length? I feel like, for $9, I can do whatever I want with it.

On the needles

I finished my two-tone moebius cowl a week or so ago but it is still sitting around waiting to have its ends woven in. Note my use of the passive voice because I HATE weaving in ends and I am hoping the End Weaving Fairies will come along and do it for me.

My entrelac scarf on Ravelry
I recently dug out a project that's been on the needles for literally years — an entrelac scarf knitted with Noro Kureyon sock yarn. I cast this on back when I was still going to weekly knitting group, back before I got promoted at work and started working crazy hours, back when we lived in our old house, back I think even before we got Dog #1, let alone had a baby ... it honestly feels like a lifetime ago. I am determined to finish it this year ...

This is, loosely speaking, Danica by Jesse Loesberg, which is a great introduction to entrelac for even a relatively new knitter. It looks terribly complicated and difficult, but if you can knit, purl and pick up stitches, you can do entrelac. I actually think entrelac is a wonderful technique for new-ish knitters to take on, because it really helped me learn to "read" my knitting. A lot of entrelac projects use two (or more) colors to make a checkerboard pattern, but I feel like Noro and entrelac are a match made in heaven. The slow color changes make for a wonderful harlequin pattern without any effort on the knitter's part.

This project is, in a way, symbolic of much of the knitting I do. You hear people talk about being a "process" or a "product" knitter, and in a way, I'm neither, because I knit things that I honestly don't think I will ever wear, like this scarf. It's more just the desire to create something beautiful. I will probably give this away when it's done — which makes me happy in a way, too. In fact, I have another handknit that I am going to feature in this week's giveaway, so be sure to check back tomorrow!

Fashion Challenge: Tulip print dress

So, I'm kind of an idiot, because this dress (which is sleeveless) would actually have made a perfect base for next week's Work It Wednesdays challenge, which is to make a summer dress look winter-appropriate. Oh well.

Work It Wednesday: Red + green - Christmas

My co-worker and I decided we're going to do a weekly fashion challenge, which I've decided to call Work It Wednesdays. This week's challenge was to pair green and red without looking "Christmas-y."

Toddler Tuesdays: Cranky pants

Rough, rough night last night for me and my girl, as in, no one got much sleep. So the following can be put under the heading of "not my best work."

Weekly Fashion Challenge: Green tribal top

I'm plunging right in to my weekly fashion challenge today with this green tribal-print blouse. I have always worn it with skinny trousers, so I wanted to do something different and try it with a skirt.

Sunday giveaway: Studded cinch belt

For this week's giveaway, I've chosen another accessory — this bad-ass studded black leather belt.

Snow day roundup

Not stuck at home, but stuck at work today — the roads are so nasty that I'm skipping my usual trek home for lunch to walk the dogs and snap outfit pics. So here's a little roundup from the interwebs instead.

Quickie

Super snowy, busy day today — I didn't shoot as many pictures as I usually do because I was rushing and, let's be honest, it shows.

Toddler Tuesdays: Early Valentines

For this week's Toddler Tuesdays post, I decided to build off one of my fashion challenge items for the week. I started with the black-and-white palette of my dress, which meant I had limited options on the toddler side for how to coordinate with it.

I was, of course, super excited to test drive my new boots, so I had to come up with an outfit for them right away.

On the Needles, plus giveaway winner

I seem to have gotten the shopping bug out of my system for now, so instead of doing Weekend Wants today, I thought I'd do something a little different and show you the knitting project I'm working on.

2 out of 3 ain't bad

So I kind of failed in this week's style challenge. I was supposed to incorporate these three garments into my wardrobe this week:

A tribute to a friend

Apologies for the late post today; I went home early from work because I was feeling so lousy. I feel a bit better after a blissful hourlong nap, but I'm still pretty miserable.

Refashion self-challenge: Moth-eaten sweater

I am snowed in today, so instead of my usual OOTD post, I thought I'd offer up something a little different. One of my goals for 2014 was to make a dent in my knitting works-in-progress/mending pile.Well, after seeing about 9 billion things on Pinterest about making an infinity scarf out of a sweater last weekend, I decided to tackle one of the items in my rag bag with what may be the easiest "sewing" project of all time.

This was one of my favorite sweaters of all time, an orange cashmere short-sleeved pullover with an asymmetrical neckline that my husband gave me for Christmas years ago. My camera hates bright colors, but trust me when I say it is the most perfect shade of orange in the universe. So I was heartbroken when it got destroyed.

Working 9-to-5

Sorry for the late post. One of those days when real life intrudes on my blog life. So it goes.

This outfit is a tried-and-true one that I've worn, oh, plenty of times in the past couple of years. In fact it was this dress that inspired my paean to polyester. Last summer I paired it with a tan belt and these same shoes. What can I say, I love a good day dress.

Groundhog Day giveaway: Winter white beret

In honor of Groundhog Day, this week's giveaway will help the winner survive six more weeks of winter.

This white knit beret has a pretty cable pattern and is super soft. It is a little bit on the smaller side, so if you have thick/curly hair (or a big head!), it will fit more like a beanie. It's a synthetic knit, so it's machine washable, and it's very lightweight so it doesn't totally smush your hair.

The rules to enter are as follows (and to my readers outside the U.S., please note this giveaway is open to all!):

To enter:
