Pick 5 Fashion Challenge

So it's no secret that I love fashion challenges. The writer in me sees them as being analogous to a good writing challenge — a starting point to focus the mind. And just like with writing, you find that there is still infinite freedom even within the confines of a restrained form. Or am I getting too metaphysical here?

At any rate, a friend and I were talking about how we both have the bad habit of wearing certain things once, and then throwing them back into the closet, never to be seen again. This was born the Pick 5 Challenge.

For this challenge, we are each picking out five items and pledging to wear all five items every week. And we agreed to try to challenge ourselves further by picking distinctive items, not just neutral basics. Here are my five:

1. Khaki/red vintage dress

I have had this for about a year and have worn it ... once. Why? No good reason other than I have been too busy wearing other things. Time for this dress to earn its keep!

2. Pink oxford shirt

OK, this one is kind of a neutral basic, but I have my reasons for picking it — namely, the fact I have a mental block about button-down shirts. Time to see if I can change that. I have some great ones in my closet (including this one) that really don't see enough wear.

3. Mint polka dot skinnies

I love mint, I love polka dots, I love skinny trousers — I was powerless to resist these when I found them at my local thrift store. But they have been sitting on the shelf for too long now.

4. Royal blue cardigan

This was a bad impulse buy at a rummage sale. I have been loving my gray old man cardigan so much that I thought another old man cardigan would be just the thing ... but I don't think I've ever worn it. Let's see what I can do with this old guy.

5. Gray booties

I spotted these next to the checkout counter at the thrift store, saw they were my size, and just threw them in my cart and didn't look back. I had been coveting booties for a while and it just seemed like fate. I get compliments every time I wear them, and yet — I never seem to reach for them. So I'm going to put them to the test.

We'd love to have you join in this challenge. Your "five" can be anything — clothes, shoes, accessories. You can find us on Instagram at @bonmarchecouture and @you_get_to_be_lost, where we'll be posting our outfits daily. I'm also going to do a roundup here on the blog at the end of each week to see how I did. Anyone who joins in and tags their items with #take5challenge will be entered to win a $20 gift certificate to my Etsy shop at the end of April.

  1. Hi Emily!! What a great idea for a challenge. Like you (and most) I do the same thing! I am actually on somewhat of a "campaign" right now, to wear anything in my Winter clothing that I haven't worn this season, before I switch my Summer clothes out this Spring. But I love the idea of finding 5 new favorite items, just by making yourself wear them! That's what I love about packing a limited amount of things, I wear the heck out of things I might not normally wear for five days or whatever (I just did a packing post actually, right here: http://perfectlypriya.blogspot.com/2015/03/packing-list-for-another-long-weekend.html) Hope you are well!

    1. That campaign sounds awesome! I totally have had similar moments of near-panic where I'm like, "Wait, I gotta wear X, Y and Z before the warm weather comes!!" Although here in upstate NY it's also like ... no rush :)
