Thrift audit: April 27, Salvation Army

I'm starting this thrift audit post with an apology, because I totally lied to you guys last week.

You see that dress in the upper right-hand corner? Recognize it? It was in my collage from last week, too ... but when I got to the end of my post, I realized that it was really from a different shopping trip. (Not going to lie, they kind of all run together after a while.) But, apologies aside, let's get down to business:

Total spent: $5.50
Items purchased: 8
Cost per item: $0.68

I have become totally addicted to the $0.49 cent sale day at my local Salvation Army. It's me and a handful of other regulars, we all chat as we wait outside for them to open at 9 a.m. And some days, I wind up buying stuff that's less than spectacular just because I feel like I should be able to find SOMETHING at such low prices. But, I did pick up a few goodies, like the aforementioned dress:

1970s floral print dress with red trim

Keep or sell: Sell
Another day, another pretty 1970s dress. Not to sound nonchalant about it; it's just that my closet is bursting with them at the moment! But I love the muted colors of this floral motif and the crimson trim at the neckline.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Khaki shift with belt

Keep or sell: Sell
I don't know what it was about this dress that compelled me to buy it. It's home-sewn (rather well, I might add) but there is nothing extremely special about it. I will have to style the heck out of it, I suspect, to make it look appealing to potential buyers.
Good or bad buy: Undecided

White lace tablecloth

Keep or sell: Keep
Where some might see a plain old white lace tablecloth, I saw potential. More on this to come ...
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Brown cotton jacket

Keep or sell: Sell
If I had found this jacket a couple of years ago, I would have bought it to keep, for sure. It just seems like one of those useful pieces to have in your wardrobe (plus I have a bit of a jacket/coat-buying problem). But this is one of the things I love about thrifting for resale — I can recognize the potential of something without necessarily adding it to my wardrobe. Instead, I took this one straight to my local consignment store.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Burgundy mini dress with cutout back

Keep or sell: Sell
Consignment store clerk to me: "Do you have the belt that goes with this?" Me: " ... " But, problem solved, I took it to a different consignment store, where no such pesky questions were asked.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage pink silk dress

Keep or sell: Sell
There's something about silk. Pretty much, if I see it and it's not horribly stained or ugly, I will buy it. This one was deadstock, too (which means a lot less when we're talking about the 90s, I realize, BUT STILL it means it's basically as new), which just sealed the deal. However, when it came time to style it, I realized that I wasn't quite sure how to do it. It's never a good sign when you can't figure out how to make the dress you're trying to sell look good.
Good or bad buy: Not a great buy, but I remain hopeful

Bright floral high-low dress

Keep or sell: Sell
I couldn't resist modeling this dress before I took it to consignment, but I just realized I never posted the photos! I will have to put a post together soon, it was a fun dress to wear (my first, and possibly last, high-low hem) but not really my usual style.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage floral sarong skirt

Keep or sell: Sell
Have you ever bought a garment and then found, when you got it home, that you couldn't figure out how it worked? That was me with this skirt. I thought it was just a wrap skirt, but it has an unusual construction that I can't even explain ... I did eventually figure it out, but I'm not sure it's going to be easy to describe to potential buyers
Good or bad buy: I'm honestly not sure why I bought this, so, bad buy.

Overall grade: B

This thrifting trip smacked a bit of desperation, but it did yield some treasures. Stay tuned to learn what became of the white lace tablecloth, plus get ready for lots of pink in my next thrift haul (it's the summer of pink over here at B&RV HQ).

  1. I've had trips like that, where I look back and go "wait, why did I buy this again...?" but overall, not bad! That 70's floral dress is GORGEOUS.

    1. Ha, I thought of you when I posted this dress. I am going to try to get it listed soon because it is just SO PRETTY!

And yeah, that sarong skirt ... what. I don't even know. But maybe someone will like it!
