Thrift audit: Rummage sale and two thrift stores, week of April 10

This is part of a series of posts pulling back the veil on my process for buying and selling secondhand clothes:

Sometimes, lightning does strike twice.

After traveling to a nearby town for a bag sale at a church (my first of the season - a true sign of spring), I decided to revisit the shady thrift store where I had struck gold a few weeks earlier. And it did not disappoint. And, I'm throwing in a few recent Salvation Army purchases here as well to hold myself accountable for them. So hang on to your hats, because this was one EPIC haul.

The rummage sale

Total spent: $3.50
Cost per item: +/- $0.38

Brown tassel loafers

Keep or sell: Sell
These aren't my size (although I did have a Cinderella's-stepsister moment trying to squeeze my feet into them, ha ha) so I'm selling them. But they are SO soft, comfortable and cute that I am super jealous. (Never mind that I essentially own the same pair already ...)
Good or bad buy: Good buy. Cute, cheap, decent condition.

Vintage maternity dress

Keep or sell: Neither!
As I mentioned in the last thrift audit, I always go for vintage maternity. But rather than selling this one, I decided to share it with my fellow Shaped by Style swapper Kristina. I hope she likes it! If not, one of us will probably wind up selling it on Etsy.
Good or bad buy: Good buy — I love being able to buy for other people, and at this price, why not?

Vintage knit top

Keep or sell: Sell
Don't get me wrong, I love pretty floral dresses as much as the next person, but I dig vintage sportswear, too. This one seems like the perfect match for a red tennis skirt I picked up a few months ago!
Good or bad buy: Good buy, although I will doubtless sell it quite cheaply

Vintage plaid skirt

Keep or sell: Sell
This is kind of the perfect example of "I just bought it because it's vintage." As cute as this skirt may be, it is also the kind of thing that seems to be a dime a dozen, not just on Etsy, but in general. I will just have to hang on to it until fall, style the heck out of it and hope someone is charmed by it.
Good or bad buy: Not a great buy

Vintage deadstock dress with belt

Keep or sell: Sell ... I think?
Ugh, this dress kills me! I really love these silly 1970s/80s dresses that pretend to be a skirt and top, and the colors on this one are totally my jam. Plus, it's deadstock, which just always gets my heart pounding.
Good or bad buy: Good buy, I totally love it

Vintage dark floral dress

Keep or sell: Sell
People sometimes ask how you can tell if something is vintage, and I always say it's all about the details. The feeling of the fabric, the cut of the shoulders and the bodice, even the buttons or the belt can give it away. This one has a total late 80s vibe to me — it's all about those big pockets on the bodice.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Bow and star earrings

Keep or sell: Give away
Always stop at the jewelry table, people! How cute are these little stud earrings? I already gave the star pair away to a friend, and I think I am going to give away the bow ones in an Instagram giveaway when I finally get my act together.
Good or bad buy: Good buy, because cute earrings = winning

Vintage tank top

Keep or sell: Keep
I don't know what it is about vintage tanks like this, but I just LOVE them. I had one a few years ago that I wore to death that was basically identical to this, so I snatched it as soon as I saw it. I usually feel self-conscious in sleeveless stuff but I can already tell I'll feel awesome in this tank top.
Good or bad buy: Good buy! I literally have one tank top that I can wear out in public besides this one.

From my local Salvation Army:

Straw hat

Cost: $2.99
Keep or sell: Keep
Ever since I started the downhill slide toward 40, I have been freaking out about my skin. This hat is one piece of my new arsenal against sun damage.
Good or bad buy: Good buy. $3 is not too much to spend to protect my face!

Vintage swim suit

Cost: $0.49
Keep or sell: Keep, probably
Gonna be honest, I bought this one figuring on selling it, since it's vintage, but if it fits, I'm totally keeping it. I've been wearing a mismatched tankini for like two years (the top is too big and the bottom is too small, it's THE WORST) so I'm giving myself permission for an upgrade.
Good or bad buy: Good buy! I am at the pool almost every week in the summer, so this is well worth it

Vintage gray/red striped dress

Cost: $0.49
Keep or sell: Sell
I have been stalking this dress for a few weeks, so when it went on sale, I snatched it. But I am kind of having buyer's remorse, because this does not really meet my standard of being exceptional. I mean, I love a good 1970s shirt dress, but my sales history shows that not everyone shares my obsession with them. Still, I'll list it and keep my fingers crossed.
Good or bad buy: Probably not a great buy

From the shady thrift store:

Total spent: $7
Cost per item: $1

Vintage pink lace dress

Keep or sell: Sell
Oh my, my heart stopped when I saw this dress. The lace overlay, the bow detail: just, yeah. If it were 1994 right now, I would totally be wearing this sucker to prom. Instead, it's in my Etsy shop now
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage sweater set

Keep or sell: Sell
This is not exactly the creme de la creme of sweater sets, but I love the bright color (brighter than it looks here, darned kitchen lighting) and the knit pattern, so I went for it. Plus, it's a perfect match, color-wise, for this skirt I got a few weeks ago.
Good or bad buy: Good buy — I will list it at a good price in hopes that someone can overlook the set's few flaws

Vintage pink mod dress

Keep or sell: Sell
On the face of it, this dress is nothing special — I mean, it's a simple, home-sewn shift dress, the end. But to me, it's such a perfect example of a certain style or moment in fashion history: the cut, the color, the fabric (it has a pattern of little flowers), everything.
Good or bad buy: Good buy — it's just perfect

Vintage blue mod dress

Keep or sell: Sell
I strongly suspect the same woman made both this dress, and the pink one — maybe even from the same pattern! I just love the Cinderella blue with the daisy trim. However, the bottom hem needs re-stitching, which I should really do myself if I could be bothered to find thread in the right color ...
Good or bad buy: Good buy, because daisies and Cinderella blue

Vintage red linen dress

Keep or sell: Sell
This dress is so versatile — you could wear it loose like a caftan, or figure-hugging and belted. It's super tempting to keep it, but I will put it in my shop and see what happens.
Good or bad buy: Good buy, I love it

Vintage red home-sewn dress

Keep or sell: Sell
This one just charmed me with its rounded collar and A-line skirt, but in truth, the construction is kind of weird. The bodice is split all the way to the waistband, so either someone never finished it with fasteners, or you're supposed to wear it over a blouse? Anyway, it would be easy enough to stitch it down or just pin it closed.
Good or bad buy: So-so — it's a pretty silhouette, but it may prove a hard sell because of its quirks

Vintage brown and white jumper

Keep or sell: Sell
Another home-sewn goodie! I instantly pictured this dress over a crisp white blouse with brown platform sandals. I'm torn about when to list it, though; the color seems so somber for May, but then, it is sleeveless. What do you think?
Good or bad buy: Good buy — if I style it well, I think it can sell

Whew! What a massive haul — my closet is stretched to groaning right now, as you can imagine, so I'm trying to list things on Etsy as quickly as possible in hopes of making some sales. Stay tuned for my next haul post, featuring a novelty purse and some seriously stylish menswear ...

    1. Thanks!! I am trying to get into a regular schedule of doing thrift haul posts on the weekends and outfit posts during the week, but of course I encourage you to check back often :) I love the brown and white jumper, too; I tried it on and now I'm kind of in love!

  2. UGH. That pink lace dress, the blue with the daisies... if only they were my size. Those two are SO incredibly gorgeous and pretty. Even though I don't normally go for 60's silhouettes, I'd so wear those. I think they appeal to me more while I'm pregnant and have a belly to balance out my hips.

These posts always make me want to go thrifting more. We're going garage-saling tomorrow, though, so hopefully I find something good!

    1. Good luck at your garage sales! Yeah, this era of 60s dresses is totally my weakness (and they would look so cute w/your pregnant belly!). I want to keep ALL OF THEM.
