Trend talk: Chambray dress + vintage booties

I started out the month strong on following a few fashion challenges, but this week I totally fell off the wagon. So this is a genuine, bona fide, I-just-opened-up-my-closet-and-picked-something outfit. Which, to be honest, I haven't done in a while.

I'll be honest, a lot of my impulse to buy this chambray dress was because it was "on trend." I cringe when I hear or say that phrase, and it's kind of embarrassing to admit I bought something because it was trendy.

But you know, trends get a bad rap. Sure, it gets frustrating or annoying to see the same garments everywhere you turn. But as someone who genuinely enjoys studying and analyzing fashion trends (in my own small, poorly informed way), I also think it's fascinating to observe the zeitgeist of style. How is it that a certain look will catch the collective mind's eye of so many people?

Sure, some of it can be chalked up to the fact that there will always be those who mindlessly follow; who buy what's hot only because it's in style, not because they genuinely respond to it. But it is clearly more than that, too. There is a certain alchemy to some trends that just makes them feel right.

And I enjoy the ways in which trends prompt me to question my preconceived notions. A few years ago, I wouldn't have thought twice about a chambray dress, because who cares about chambray? But the omnipresence of this trend made me take a second look. And what do you know, I love this dress. It feels effortless and relaxed without looking messy or too casual (although, let's be honest, it could have used a good ironing).

Dress: Consignment store bag sale
Locket: Vintage, thrifted
Belt: ... not sure! I have had it since high school, I think
Booties: Vintage, thrifted
Total cost to me: About $7

    1. Thanks for checking it out! I am new to this whole chambray/denim thing (behind the times, I know) but I am loving this dress, it's so easy to wear. Can't wait to see yours too.
