Thrift Audit: Salvation Army, July 6

Just when I start feeling down on my local Salvation Army, they come through in the clutch with awesome stuff. And I give them lots of my money.

It's such an obvious thing to say, but I always come away with better purchases when I actually have time to shop at my leisure, rather than just making a mad run through the dresses and shoes and maybe a fly-by of one other section.

Total spent: $21.76
Items purchased: 24
Cost per item: $0.90

Emerald green jeggings

 Keep or sell: Keep
Truthfully, these are a little small for me (meaning uncomfortably tight) but I DON'T CARE because I love the idea of green pants.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage paisley midi skirt

Keep or sell: Sell
This skirt is so soft and pretty, it's almost tempting to keep it. But it's not really my style, so off to the shop it goes. Can't you just see wearing it with a cozy sweater and brown boots in the fall?
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Metallic knit sweater set

Keep or sell: Sell
You can't see it, but there's a matching camisole in there, and the whole set was still just 49 cents! The sweater was a tiny bit pilly, but they took it at the consignment shop, where it will be making its debut in a few weeks when they bring out the fall/winter stuff (how depressing is that, by the way?)
Good or bad buy: Good buy — it's pretty and seems to be good quality.

Yellow gingham fabric

Keep or sell: Keep
Yes, more fabric! I am ON A ROLL. I am dreaming about making a two-piece dress out of this, for some reason. There may be piping involved. It's a work in progress.
Good or bad buy: Fabric is always a good buy in my world

Two-tone girls' dress

Keep or sell: Keep
This one's for my daughter. Yellow is her favorite color, and it was 49 cents. Need I say more?
Good or bad buy: Good buy — she will have to grow into it, but I've found she wears these knit dresses year-round, so I'm unconcerned.

Vintage bright rose-print skirt

Keep or sell: Sell
This print just got me. It's so wild and cheery. I mean, blue roses, right?
Good or bad buy: Good buy, I think, provided other people like their florals in wacky colors like me

1970s striped dress with ruffle detail

Keep or sell: Sell
Oooh, I love this dress so much. There is not the remotest chance that it could fit me, though, so I'm selling it for sure.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage purple day dress

Keep or sell: Sell
On the one hand, you could say this dress is kind of ordinary. But on the other hand, it's a great shade of purple, the skirt is a good length (not too long) and it's got 3/4 sleeves, which I love. So it's actually pretty awesome.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Abstract print short-sleeve dress

Keep or sell: Sell
This dress is the print twin of another 70s dress I thrifted back in April (which is listed now in my shop, by the way) — same color palette and kind of brushstroke-y style. Unfortunately, this one has a few stains that I have to attack.
Good or bad buy: Remains to be seen

Vintage 80s maxi dress

Keep or sell: Sell
This dress, I don't even. For some reason it makes me think of a sewing pattern illustration from the 80s. The woman wearing it would be blonde, looking back over her shoulder, with her hair up in a French twist.
Good or bad buy: I honestly don't know. I mean, I think it's pretty fabulous but I don't have a great answer for the question of "When/how would I wear this?"

Gray vintage dress with detachable peplum

Keep or sell: Sell
Yeah, you heard me right: A detachable peplum. So it's basically a belt (it's elastic) with a peplum sewed onto it, which I actually think is pretty genius. (Also verrry 80s.)
Good or bad buy: Good buy? Again, it's a bit weird ... but probably easier to style than the cobalt blue maxi dress, so there's that.

Olive green shift dress

Keep or sell: Keep
I have a dress a lot like this in red, and I am still kind of on an olive-green kick, so I snatched this up. Like my red dress, this one has a crazily low neckline, which means I'm forced to wear a tank top underneath, but I'm OK with that. It's comfy and flattering.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Banana Republic silk print dress

Keep or sell: Sell
This looks kind of meh on the hanger, but I promise you it's lovely in person. It will, however, have to wait until next spring to be sold on consignment, so off to storage it goes.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Pair of vintage silk scarves

Keep or sell: Sell ...?
I'll be honest, I'm really enamored of the mustard floral one (you can see it in my latest Shaped by Style post) but I am going to try to bring myself to list them both.
Good or bad buy: Good buy — both are truly lovely

Vintage sheer bed jacket

Keep or sell: Sold!
How dreamy is this little number? I was happy to see it sell quickly.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Five pairs of boring trousers

Keep or sell: Sell
Going to be honest, I don't even remember the details about a few of these. They're mostly J. Crew, although the white ones on the far right are BCBG and really very lovely (new with tags, no less!). All are headed to consignment eventually, although a few pairs are in storage for spring.
Good or bad buy: Good buy — a total investment of $2.50 and I should make, minimum, $20 from the sale of all of these (quite possibly more).

Vintage Koret parrot print top

Keep or sell: Sell
OK, so it's a bit late in the summer for a tropical print, but how could I resist these totally 80s parrots? (Answer: I couldn't.)
Good or bad buy: Good buy? Although I still haven't found any parrot lovers who want to buy my straw purse with the parrot charm, so, who knows

Vintage Sears geometric print shirt

Keep or sell: Sold
Love the print, and the color palette, of this top, and I was happy to see it sell rather quickly
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage bold striped top

Keep or sell: Sell
This is one of those "I'll totally sell this but I think I might just have to model/style it ONCE," because I love the colors so much.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage pink sleeveless floral top

Keep or sell: Sell
I was enamored of this pretty floral print and the topstitch detail around the collar, but I failed to notice that it has a few flaws. It's also home-sewn, and tiny. So I'm afraid it may be a hard sell
Good or bad buy: Bad buy

Vintage Amy Byer plaid top

Keep or sell: Sell
This is such a gem! I absolutely love the sherbet colors and the ruched waistband. I immediately imagined it paired with a full skirt, but it also looks pretty terrific with capris. Sorely tempted to keep, but I know I'm going to list it for sale.
Good or bad buy: Good buy, it's just lovely

Overall grade: A
Keep vs. sell percentage:
16% keep / 84% sell

I"m well pleased with this thrift outing — a good mix of consignment items, vintage and only a few things for me and my family. Not to mention, I've already listed several of the vintage items in my shop!

  1. Oh, what a shame that homemade pink floral shirt is tiny, it's gorgeous!

  2. Okay, that paisley skirt -- I bet it'll sell fast. I have a paisley skirt in my shop and it is by far my most favorited and messaged-about item! Unfortunately it has a really small waist, so I have been on the lookout for more good paisley skirts to sell, because I'm pretty sure if I could get more varying sizes up, they'd sell asap.

Also, I would TOTALLY wear that parrot shirt! If you need someone to model it for your shop, sign me up! :D I also looove the striped top. Those colors!
