Thrift Audit: Hospice thrift shop, Aug. 12

On a whim the other day, I picked up the phone and called a thrift shop in a nearby town to ask if they had any sales coming up. "Yes," the woman said. "We have a bag sale every Wednesday."

Then I had to wait three agonizing weeks until I got some time off work to make the trip up to Norwich (about a half-hour away). But it was TOTALLY worth it!

Total spent: $2
Items purchased: 8
Cost per item: $0.25

Tahari shawl collar dress

Keep or sell: Sell
I love the detailing on this chic dress, plus the fabric is super soft and drapes beautifully. It has some fuzz/hair on it, though, so I need to give it a good going-over with a lint brush before I take it to consignment.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

White silk blouse

Keep or sell: Sell
This is the kind of silk that feels so buttery that you just can't stop touching it! It's a really pretty, classic blouse that I'm sure will sell in the spring.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage black leggings

Keep or sell: Sell
I usually stay away from pants, because they're hard to sell, but these black high-waisted skinny trousers just called to me. They're thick, ribbed material that made me think at first of ski pants, but the brand (which of course I can't remember right now!) is not known for sportswear, so I'm not sure. But anyway, I could totally see them being a retro wardrobe staple.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage white girls' dress

Keep or sell: Sell
I'm guessing this may have been a First Communion gown? But maybe it's not fancy enough? It has a crinoline under the skirt, though, which is pretty awesome.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage geometric print skirt

Keep or sell: Sell
I absolutely love the print on this skirt, which has kind of a pixelated appearance to it up close. It's also a larger waist size (I think 38-40 inches), which is great because I don't often find skirts in that size range.
Good or bad buy: Good buy — it looks a lot nicer after a wash and a press!

Pair of vintage belts

Keep or sell: Sell
Both of these are pretty tiny, I'm wondering if they were kids' or juniors' belts? Especially the rainbow one.
Good or bad buy: Good buy, I think, but the small size may make them harder to sell.

Vintage navy maxi dress with white detailing

Keep or sell: Sell
This dress! It was hanging up at the back of the store, over by the bathrobes and stuff, which probably means it's a nightgown, but I don't even care, because, LOOK AT THOSE CUFFS.

Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage gray geometric print hostess gown

Keep or sell: Sell
This one, too, I feel like was probably originally intended, if not as a nightgown, than at least as loungewear (I feel like I can totally envision the Sears catalog photo spread for it). But I could so see someone rocking this with a floppy hat, high boots and a leather belt, you know?
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Overall grade: A
Percentage to sell: 100%!

This was a great outing. I didn't spend too much, I didn't buy too much, and the things I did buy,
I love, and I have good plans for. I only wish I could get to that thrift store more often! Stay tuned next week for a short but sweet haul from my local Salvation Army, and in the meantime, if you see anything you like pictured above, feel free to make me an offer!

  1. That blue maxi dress!!! If it's my size I might need it after I'm over my spending freeze because it is GORGEOUS. Also, I don't think it's supposed to be a nightgown (unless it says sleepwear or loungewear on the tag), most thrift stores just don't quite know how to categorize vintage. I mean, that wrap skirt you styled for SBS was in the linens because they thought it was an apron, and I found a vintage 70's adult maxi skirt (it fit me 6 months pregnant) in the CHILD section (which, yay, cheaper!) and a maxi dress that was definitely NOT a nightgown hanging with the sleepwear.

But I am serious about that blue maxi. If it's close to fitting my 40-30-46 measurements I really, really want it. Or at least hey, I could model it for you for your shop! :D I'd totally do that, too. Haha! Anything to at least wear it once.

    1. Isn't it lovely?! It's super thick and warm, too, so I feel like it would be so cozy for colder weather. I will let you know when I have the measurements (right now it's in the ENORMOUS pile of "to list" items for fall/winter that I am hoping to tackle later on this month). I kinda think it's on the small side but I'll definitely get back to you when I know more :)
