Thrift Audit: Rummage sale, Sept. 25

Children are a lot like pets — you do something once, and they expect it every time. I took my daughter to this rummage sale on a Thursday morning right before our usual weekly library visit. We fought the crowds (place was NUTS) and grabbed ourselves a few cupcakes from the bake sale on our way out. Then we sat, giggling, in the back seat of my car, licking icing off our fingers before going to story time at the library. (Side note: my crazy work schedule is totally worth it for moments like that one.) Anyway, now EVERY WEEK when we go to the library, she asks me if there's a "shopping sale" at the church next door. Nope, kid, not until spring. And yeah, I'm just as bummed as you are about it.

Not that this sale was extraordinary — it was just fun.

Total spent: $6.40
Items purchased: 11
Cost per item: $0.58

Gap pewter silk tank top

Keep or sell: Keep
I bought this with every intention of selling it. Unfortunately, the fabric is super, super worn around the bottom edge. So it's going into the scrap bag to be used for future sewing projects (which should be interesting since it's an XS and I ... am not)
Good or bad buy: Bad buy! I get so impulsive at rummage sales that I don't always check condition, and I paid the price here.

Vintage madras plaid skirt

Keep or sell: Sell
I think half the reason I bought this is that I sold a dress with almost exactly the same print. The colors are so pretty, and the cotton is so soft and light.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage blue and white pinstriped shorts

Keep or sell: Sell
A preppy classic! I always want to wear Bermuda shorts like this but I usually don't like the way they look on me. These are probably men's shorts, but I feel like they have a narrow enough cut that they would work for women, too.
Good or bad buy: Good buy, even if they do have to wait for spring.

Navy and white striped girls' skirt

Keep or sell: Keep
More clothes hoarding — this one won't fit my daughter for several years. But it's cute!
Good or bad buy: Good buy

The Limited yellow linen shorts

Keep or sell: Sell
More shorts I'd love to wear if I could! These are several sizes too small, but I love the color. They are in great shape and should sell well on consignment when the time comes.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Fabric yardage, remnants and scraps

Keep or sell: Both
I'll admit it, I was a little desperate here. The plaid and the colorful floral print are both probably less than 1 yard each. The white fabric is a nice heavier lining fabric, which I'm sure will come in handy. And the purple crushed velvet ... yeah. It's a crazy grab-bag of remnants, none of which are particularly big. For some reason I have decided to try to make myself leggings out of it (kind of in the style of these) because, who doesn't need a pair of purple crushed velvet leggings, right? The only sane purchase here was the pink floral/striped fabric in the center, which is a really lovely, lightweight fabric that would make an absolutely dreamy vintage-inspired dress (and there's enough of it to make it work, I think). I've got to get it measured and photographed, and then I'll list it in my shop. Update: Here's the listing.
Good or bad buy: Not great, I really am not sure what I'm going to do with most of this.

Not pictured

An ugly but highly functional pair of winter boots for my daughter, quite possibly my best purchase of the day.

Overall grade: C
Keep/sell ratio:
Keep 54% / Sell 46%

One of the worse keep/sell ratios I've had in a while! But all bets are off when it comes to fabric and kids' clothes, apparently. As always, if you are interested in anything you see here, just contact me for details. Stay tuned for an actual outfit post later this week, featuring my new favorite spot for taking pictures.
