Thrift Audit: Salvation Army, Sept. 30 (Part 2)

So my Sept. 30 trip to Salvation Army was so epic I had to break it into two separate posts. Last week, it was all about the vintage fabric; this week, it's the clothes.

Total spent: $40.19
Items purchased: 19
Cost per item: $2.12

Vintage white straw box purse

Keep or sell: Sell
Real talk: I don't know anything about purses. My evaluation of vintage purses basically consists of going, "Ooh, that looks cute!" and then buying it if it's less than $6.
Good or bad buy: Good buy? I think. But it will wait for spring/summer.

Vintage floral print bag with ... plastic handle?

Keep or sell: Sell
What can I say, I love a crazy print, especially in these colors. This bag is no great shakes, probably, but it sure is cute!
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage deerskin handbag

Keep or sell: Sell
I am having a problem telling if this leather is navy or black, but other than that, this is a pretty little purse in nice shape (cute lining fabric, too).
Good or bad buy: Good buy, if I can figure out the color! (Doesn't it look navy here?)

Yellow adjustable Nautica belt

Keep or sell: Keep
Part of my continuing effort to build up a stockpile of yellow accessories ... because I love yellow.
Good or bad buy: Good buy at 50 cents

Vintage Thai silk scarf

Keep or sell: Sell
The floral motif on this scarf was so pretty, I had to buy it. And it's silk, which I don't often find (or if I do, it's trashed).
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage floral/geometric polyester jersey fabric

Keep or sell: Keep
So I found this fabric mixed in with all the clothes when I went to photograph them and ... I was too lazy to go back and edit my post from last week, so here you go. But isn't it awesome? I can't wait to make a dress out of it — it's super soft, too.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage Asian satin minidress

Keep or sell: Sell
Can I just say I would have been allll about this dress when I was in high school/early college? Add some fishnets and Doc Martens and I would have been GOOD TO GO.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage bright pink peignoir with lace and ribbon trim

Keep or sell: Sell
My camera kind of failed to capture the awesomeness that is this sheer dressing gown. The pink positively GLOWS. I did a small repair to re-attach the loop that the button goes into, and now it's good to go.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage embroidered crop top

Keep or sell: Sell
OK, so it's missing a button, but it's still pretty amazing. I will hang onto this for summer, because someone has got to buy this and wear it to a festival.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage textured knit white cardigan

Keep or sell: Sell
As a knitter, I'm drawn toward interesting knit patterns — this one made me think of lilies of the valley. The sweater is in lovely shape, and now that I'm looking at it, I see that it's like the cousin of one I have in my shop already.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage bra and panties set

Keep or sell: Sell
I may have squealed when I found this, because I NEVER see lingerie sets like this one. I should have done a better job of pressing it, but it's still lovely. You can see the listing here.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage home-sewn shift dress

Keep or sell: Sell
I am not sure exactly why I was so charmed by this humble little shift. I think it was the round collar and pintucks that did me in. I'm going to give it a good cleaning and pressing before spring, and hopefully make it shine.
Good or bad buy: ?? Questionable at best

Vintage You Babes quilted cotton jacket

Keep or sell: Sell
Believe me, if this fit, I would not be selling it. I am so in love with it, in fact, that I've decided to make a quilted jacket of my own (never mind that I have no idea what I'm doing). Look forward to a post about that project several centuries from now. In the meantime, this jacket is in my shop.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage dress with schoolgirl collar and tie

Keep or sell: Sell
Sometimes I have to buy things because they're just, like, the Platonic form of something. This dress is just the perfect slouchy schoolgirl style dress, I can't even. I love the colors and the huge collar!
Good or bad buy: Good buy — it had a few marks on it, but they came out nicely in the wash, so it's looking good now

Nina Leonard windowpane-check cardigan tunic

Keep or sell: Keep
My friend spotted this on the hangup rack and insisted that I buy it. I was super skeptical but now I kind of love it. Thanks Jessica!
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage crushed velvet babydoll dress

Keep or sell: Sell
Speaking of things I would have rocked when I was in high school, this dress would have been my DREAM. It's pretty dingy, so I am debating the best method of getting it cleaned up (i.e. I am saving up my money to pay for dry cleaning).
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage striped shirt dress

Keep or sell: Sell
This dress confounds me a bit. The fabric feel and texture really reminds me of pajamas ... but I kind of think it's a dress.
Good or bad buy: ?? I suspect it's going to be a hard sell.

Deadstock vintage plus-size Southwestern dress

Keep or sell: Sell
Thrilled to find this awesome dress (beaded fringe!) that is also a true plus size (I think it's a size 20 or thereabouts). The fact that it's deadstock is just the cherry on top.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage Tanner of North Carolina dress

Keep or sell: Sell
I had never heard of this brand until I saw this dress, but when a dress looks like this, brand really doesn't matter. Also, it's super soft fabric.
Good or bad buy: Good buy — it's in the shop now.

I'll let these results speak for themselves. Really, though, I was pleased with this entire thrift outing, even if I did do some big spending (I kind of had a heart attack when the cashier rang me up). As always, if you see anything you're interested in, let me know — I love making deals and I want to find good homes for all these lovely things (except that awesome fabric, it's all mine).

  1. If I'm correct, that plastic handled purse is a Lady's Pride, right? I sold one early in my Etsy career and have kept my eye out for more. I've actually got a shiny gold one up for grabs in my shop at the moment. I don't know a lot about purses either but I just love the unique look of the ones from that brand.

Your savings blow me away! I think a virtual high five is in order. It's always a great feeling saving more than you spent, or thereabout.

    1. Oooh, it looks like you're right about the Lady's Pride bag, thanks for the tip! As I said, I have NO CLUE about bags and purses so I just grab stuff that looks cute. And trying to do searches for stuff like this to attempt to ID it can be so frustrating/difficult.

And yeah, I am definitely lucky to have a local thrift store where prices are still really reasonable. Although I went back there this week and it seemed like everything is suddenly priced a lot higher, and ALL the vintage and brand-name dresses were marked with the "never goes on sale" tags :( :( So maybe my gravy train has finally come to an end.

  2. Oh, that quilted jacket is so gorgeous! Also, I'm right with you on the highschool fashion! That green velvet baby doll is absolutely my then-dream piece.

    1. You should have seen me trying to squeeze my shoulders into that quilted jacket! It's so divine. And isn't it funny to see some of the fashions from our high school days coming back around? I guess I should have kept my flowered leggings after all ...
