Thrift Audit: Rummage sale, Nov. 6

So you may have heard me promise that I was done going to rummage sales for the year. Well, I lied.

It turns out I don't actually have any willpower, at all. But that means I get to bring you another awesome thrift audit! So, you're welcome.

Total spent: $1.40
Items purchased: 14
Cost per item: $0.10

Blue chinos

Keep or sell: Sell
Being honest, I don't remember if these are already at the consignment store, or if they're in my attic waiting for spring. Either way, they looked a lot nicer than they do here after a trip through the wash!
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage maternity blouse

Keep or sell: Sell
I was almost ready to leave this particular rummage sale, thinking I wouldn't come away with any vintage at all, until I spotted the maternity section and saw this cuteness. It's hard to tell from this admittedly lousy photo, but it has a cute double collar with a little string tie. And I love the print!
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage home-sewn pastel striped dress

Keep or sell: Sell ... ?
This was one of my few other vintage finds. I love the pattern and cut of this simple summer dress — I can totally imagine this being one of those "Super E-Z" patterns for beginners.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage maternity sweater

Keep or sell: Sell
The other great maternity item I found was this sweater with a heart motif around the yoke. It's wool and seems like it would be really warm and comfy. I wish I had had this when I was pregnant!
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage crewel embroidery wicker frame purse

Keep or sell: Sold
I absolutely fell for this little jewel of a purse and have been obsessively researching crewel embroidery ever since I brought it home. Because obviously I need ANOTHER hobby/craft, right?
Good or bad buy: Good buy, it sold quickly

Gray pinstriped trousers

Keep or sell: Keep
They weren't all good buys, though. I had bought these with an eye toward selling them on consignment, but when I got them home, I realized the fabric was pretty worn. Since they're close to my size (a bit tight through the hips, argh), I feel obligated to keep them and try to wear them, but I don't particularly like them.
Good or bad buy: Bad buy

Vintage pullover blouse

Keep or sell: Keep
This is the exact kind of top I want to wear pretty much all summer long. Light, floaty, not sleeveless but with sleeves that are barely there. Looking at this picture, I'm realizing this is probably actually a maternity garment, too, but I don't care, so ha.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage little girls' dress

Keep or sell: Sell/give away
Raise your hand if you wish this came in your size! I love the flutter sleeves. The fabric is semi-sheer, so it's just very sweet and angelic. I gave it a good wash and it came out looking great. I'm trying to find out if it would fit my friends' baby daughter, but I'm afraid it might already be too small. If so, I'll list it in the shop in spring.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Girls' floral Guess jeans

Keep or sell: Donate
So far I'm 0 for 3 on pants. I picked these up as a consignment item but failed to notice that they were really worn on the seat. So I wound up just giving them to the Salvation Army, boo.
Good or bad buy: Bad buy

Vintage floral curtains

Keep or sell: Keep
Definitely making a summer dress out of these. Trying to wait until it's at least spring to do it, though. I have so many things I want to sew right now!
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Gap khakis

Keep or sell: Sell
As I've said before, if I see a clean pair of Gap khakis, I buy them. These ones are at consignment and I'm hoping they sell.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Girls' floral top

Keep or sell: Keep
Once again I bought something just for the print/fabric. Will I keep this for another 5 years until my daughter can wear it? Will I get impatient and refashion it into something she can wear now? Will I get even more impatient and try to sell it on consignment? No one knows. But it is a pretty print.
Good or bad buy: Not the best, but it may work out in the end

Olive green cotton tiered skirt

Keep or sell: Sell
The quintessential hippie skirt, complete with the little jangly bells that hang off the waistband string. Bonus points, the waistband is truly adjustable and can fit up to an XL size. Off to the hippie consignment store it goes!
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage fleece-lined boots

Keep or sell: Keep
This was my personal moment of weakness. And honestly, if it hadn't been for that very, very slight lift at the heel, I would have passed these boots buy. Isn't that dumb? I predict I will spent all winter trying to figure out ways to wear these so that they don't look like off-brand Uggs. Wish me luck.
Good or bad buy: Bad buy

Overall grade: B-
Keep vs. sell ratio:
42% keep / 58% sell

Not my best ratio, but I am happy with the vintage I found, and I'm pleased that the purse sold quickly (isn't it pretty?).

Comments

  1. The fabric is wonderful! And those boots don't even slightly look like uggs to me.

    1. Aren't the colors of that fabric terrific? I can already envision the exact dress I want to make out of it (floaty and flouncy). I'm still not convinced about the boots, but if nothing else, they are quite warm and comfy!
