Pick 5 Fashion Challenge recap

As March draws to a close, so too does the Pick 5 fashion challenge my friend and I came up with a few weeks ago. In this challenge, each of us picked five items and pledged to wear them every week until the end of the month.

And you know what? I'm SO GLAD it's over.

Thrift audit: Salvation Army, March 2

This is part of a series of posts pulling back the veil on my process for buying and selling secondhand clothes:

I get so excited for these 49-cent Mondays at my local Salvation Army that it kinda bums me out when I don't find 9 zillion flawless amazing treasures. I gotta relax my expectations a little bit, I think. Nevertheless, this trip to the thrift still yielded a few good buys.

Give us bread, but give us roses: The story behind the name

I wanted to share a little bit about the story behind the name "Bread and Roses Vintage." It's something that means a lot to me, so I hope you'll take a minute to read about it:

Strikers in the Lawrence, Mass., "Bread and Roses" strike, from the Walter P. Reuther Library
As we come marching, marching in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray,

Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,

For the people hear us singing: "Bread and roses! Bread and roses!"

Out of time: Floral sheer tunic and polka dot skinnies

Inevitably, I start off a week of vacation with a to-do list that's 9,000 miles long and completely unrealistic. About two or three days into the week, one of two things happens: a) I lost interest in the list entirely and just run out of steam; or b) I spend my "vacation" running around like a madman and exhausting myself.

OTT: Floral print vest and vintage white skirt

I bought this craaazy, over-the-top vest in a fit of madness at a consignment store bag sale. Chalk it up to longing for spring — these bright candy colors just called to me.

Black and Blue: Cobalt cardigan and vintage ruffle blouse

I have kind of a love affair with blue and black together. I know it is one of those "rules" that you're not supposed to mix the two ... but maybe that's why I like it. I'M A REBEL, folks.

Vibes and Stuff: 70s inspired flares and vintage jacket

For a while I was fighting the zeitgeist about referring to every style, mood or feeling as a "vibe." But I've given in. So here, I present to you a TOTAL 70S VIBES look that I put together today:

Pick 5 Fashion Challenge: Week 1

Despite pledges to the contrary, not all my looks from the first week of my Pick 5 Fashion Challenge made it up on the blog (I did post them all on Instagram, though, do I get points for that?). So I thought I'd do a little recap.

Thrift audit: Feb. 23, Salvation Army

This is part of a series of posts pulling back the veil on my process for buying and selling secondhand clothes:

Bear with me, as there is an element of redundancy in these first few "thrift audit" posts: i.e., it's always from the Salvation Army and (almost) everything is always $0.49. I promise that once the spring/summer rummage sales kick in, there will be a little more variety here. But anyway, this one is interesting because ... well, I kind of went nuts with a few things.

Greenery: Green vest and olive skirt for St. Patrick's Day

I am not even faintly Irish, but as I have written before, I love a good challenge/theme, so naturally I had to pick out something green to wear today.

A gray beginning: Gray jumper with ruffle-sleeve blouse

Today marked the start of my one-month fashion challenge. I started off easy with these gray booties, but really this outfit was all about something else —

Pick 5 Fashion Challenge

So it's no secret that I love fashion challenges. The writer in me sees them as being analogous to a good writing challenge — a starting point to focus the mind. And just like with writing, you find that there is still infinite freedom even within the confines of a restrained form. Or am I getting too metaphysical here?

A tale of two outfits

Here's the thing: I try to be "honest" about the outfits I photograph myself wearing. That is to say, I want the pictures on here to show me as I really am: the clothes I actually wear from day to day. But sometimes an idea strikes me in such a way that I decide to photograph it anyway, even though I know I'm going to take it off the moment the camera is put away.

Thrift audit: Feb. 12, Salvation Army

This is part of a series of posts pulling back the veil on my process for buying and selling secondhand clothes:

Another Monday, another $0.49 sale at my local Salvation Army.

Shop update: Signs of spring

For me, the first sign of spring isn't green grass or flower buds; it's when my local consignment stores start accepting spring/summer clothes, and winter stuff starts getting marked down. It always catches me off guard, because it feels like we are still SO DEEP in winter here in upstate New York, but I have to remind myself there is a whole wide world out there that is not buried under 2 1/2 feet of snow. Must be nice.

At any rate, one must change with the times, so I have been both marking down fall and winter items in my Etsy shop (be sure to check out my $5 Sale section), and trotting out some new listings of, if not entirely summer-y fashions, at least things that hint at the seasons to come. Here's a look at some of my favorites:
