Thrift Audit: Salvation Army Mega-Haul, March 7, Part 1 of 2

You know a thrift outing is good when it's measured by the number of garbage bags you stuff into your trunk (in this case, three). What you're seeing today is only a fraction of the haul — I'll share the rest next week.

This was yet another discount day at my local Salvation Army, and now that we're nearing the end of the season, they've started discounting multiple color tags on the same day. So basically it was a feeding frenzy. I'll reveal my cost-per-item next week when I do the final tally, but suffice to say I got some good deals. As with last week's thrift audit, all items marked "sell" are available to be purchased via Instagram (click the item title for a link). I'm going to keep items in the IG shop for at least a week after they're posted, at which time vintage items may migrate to Etsy (at higher prices) and newer merchandise will to go consignment if it's in season. So if you are interested or have questions, let me know right away!

Ann Taylor black faux wrap dress, size XS

Keep or sell: Sell
Gonna be honest, I am not much of a "little black dress" person myself, but I like the interesting cut of this one.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Dark brown Loft cords, size 6P

Keep or sell: Sell
I love a good pair of cords! These are nice and soft without feeling flimsy, and they have a slight flare / boot cut.
Good or bad buy: Good buy — they are new with tags, which is always a plus.

Brown textured London Times shift dress, size 8

Keep or sell: ??
This one is in my "maybe" pile — I would like to try it on and give it a go, but as with pretty much everything in my wardrobe, I could be convinced to part with it. I love the little details, the empire waist and the deep pleats — it seems like it would be really flattering, and something you could wear in all seasons.
Good or bad buy: Good buy no matter what

Tan Evan Picone blazer, size 12

Keep or sell: Sell
This poor blazer is looking a bit rumpled, but it's really a lovely garment, with some interesting top stitching, hidden pockets and little shaping darts at the neckline.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Deadstock vintage cropped tan blazer

Keep or sell: Sell
I'm not sure why exactly I love this little blazer, but I do. I think I am going to have to have a go at styling it when I photograph it for Etsy, because I've got all kinds of ideas.
Good or bad buy: Deadstock = good buy almost any time in my book.

Vintage sleeveless lacy knit top

Keep or sell: Sell
Maybe it's just because I've been thinking about Easter dresses, but this just screams spring to me. I'd love to put it over a sleeveless dress or a floral skirt. And the knitter in me wants to know more about this lace stitch ...
Good or bad buy: Good buy

DIY'd embellished tank top dress

Keep or sell: Give away
The daisy trim and bandana-print skirt got me, and I didn't give this one a closer look. Turns out it was a home sewing project in which someone added appliques to an old tanktop, and sewed on a skirt. For reasons I cannot comprehend, they also added a side zip, which is a little messy at the bottom. Not exactly something I can re-sell ... so naturally I gave it away to a friend.
Good or bad buy: Bad buy! I am clearly never going to learn my lesson.

Willi Smith ruffle trim cardigan, size M

Keep or sell: Sell
I realized during my last closet clean-out that I have WAY more cardigans than anything else in my dresser. At first I felt sheepish, and like that meant I should get rid of them. But then I realized — who said I have to have equal numbers of different types of garments? I wear cardigans ALL the time, so I give myself permission to have 9 million of them.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

August Silk pink sleeveless sweater shell, M

Keep or sell: Sell
This is one of two sleeveless sweaters of this brand that I picked up. I also have a chocolate brown cardigan from this brand tucked away somewhere in my fall/winter consignment stash (I'm calling it a "stash" instead of a "mountain" because that sounds classier).
Good or bad buy: Good buy — it's not my color, but it's lovely all the same

Banana Republic tie-dye silk dress / cover-up, size 4

Keep or sell: Sell
I seriously have a love affair with silk. If it were up to me, I would have waaay more silk in my wardrobe. This dress seems like something my alter ego would throw over a bathing suit after a leisurely day on the beach. You know, if I wore a size 4 and lived somewhere tropical ...
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Boho embroidered pink tank top

Keep or sell: Sell
Notice a color theme here? I found a lot of pink stuff, for whatever reason. Hey, it's spring, it's almost Easter, I suppose it makes sense. This top is really soft and flowy, and I love all the details in the embroidery.
Good or bad buy: Good buy — if I don't sell it on Instagram, it's off to the hippie consignment shop with it.

Gap ruffled chiffon tank top, size 2

Keep or sell: Sell
I'm a sucker for details, what can I say. I like a little ruffle, an interesting texture, something that makes what I'm wearing a bit different. I love the color of this one (reminds me of the Pantone color of the year from a few years back — anyone remember "Radiant Orchid"?)
Good or bad buy: Good buy, I think

Gap super soft wool boyfriend sweater with elbow patches, XS

Keep or sell: Sell
Seriously, it's SO soft. I kind of just want to keep it and use it as a pillow. The elbow patches are gray flannel and very cute. This + leggings for those days when you just want to stay in your pajamas all day.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

August Silk purple sleeveless sweater shell, size L

Keep or sell: Sell
See above — it's the same exact top, different color and size.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage patterned sweater dress, size Medium

Keep or sell: Sell
After I bought a bunch of them a few weeks ago, I feel like the universe is now sending me all the crazy sweater dresses like it's my destiny. I pretty much had no choice but to buy this one. I mean, be honest, you can't stop staring at it, am I right?
Good or bad buy: I honestly don't know ... I'm gonna say "good" because deep down I think this sweater dress is awesome

Vintage navy fit-and-flare dress

Keep or sell: Sell
I don't even know exactly how to describe the cut of this dress, but somehow I like it. The little details like the bodice, and the turnback cuffs, just make it for me.
Good or bad buy: Good buy, I hope? I feel like this is one of those things that's just a bit unusual, but yet not remarkable enough in any way to really take anyone's breath away, that might make it hard to sell. So if you know anyone who might like it — send them my way!

J. Crew navy cotton blazer,  size XS

Keep or sell: Sell
Full disclosure, this blazer was looking the worse for wear when I found it at the thrift store, but after a good solid trip through the washer and drier, it came out looking great. I love the seam finish details (are those Hong Kong seams or French seams? I have no idea but they're pretty).
Good or bad buy: Good buy

Vintage navy accordion-pleated knit skirt

Keep or sell: Keep
Not only is this one already washed, dried and hanging in my closet, I also have an outfit planned with it and put together on the hanger. Basically, this is the skirt I've been waiting for.
Good or bad buy: Good buy

  1. What a haul! Makes me itch to get back into my thrifting game.
I totally agree that it is ok to keep a million sweaters. I have so many (46 at last count) that I can't even keep them in my drawers or closet. There is a corner of my room dedicated to my stacks of sweaters.

  2. Glad I'm not the only sweater junkie out there! I have stacks of them too :) It is always cold where I work so they are indispensable for all seasons. Sweaters make everything better.
